David Brooks asked:

Wood blinds are a classic window treatments choice. They are durable, easy to use and attractive. They also go well with a wide variety of interior decors. But some people may not know that there are faux wood blinds that offer the same looks, functionality with increased durability at a reduced cost. Faux wood blinds have other distinct advantages.

First, a little background information, faux wood blinds come in two forms: composite wood and vinyl, a type of PVC plastic. The composite wood variety is made from a blend of real hardwoods and plastic polymers to form highly durable slats and other components that make up the blind. PVC blinds are made exclusively from a vinyl polymer.

In terms of price, the vinyl variety is the cheapest, wood composite is second and wood blinds are the most expensive. Comparing the same brand, same size, with no extra options, the price break-outs were as follows: 40” x 64” vinyl blinds were approximately $78.00, 40” x 64” composite wood blinds were approximately $101.00, and the 40” x 64” wood blinds were approximately $119.00. These prices are meant for comparison sake only to illustrate the differences.

In terms of weight, wood blinds are the lightest weights of the three, wood composites are the second lightest and vinyl blinds are the heaviest. This is an important consideration mostly when you are ordering fairly large blinds.

One of the nice things about faux woods is that they are very durable. They will not fade, crack, warp or split, making them perfect for rooms with heat and humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens. This durability is often important in kid’s rooms. Composite wood blinds are the most durable. They have a hard coating that is highly scratch resistant. That is not to say the PVC blinds are not durable, just not as scratch resistant as the composites.

To help you further differentiate when you should buy composites over PVC blinds, here are some important details. If you are trying to match up other wood stains from your home’s décor, composite blinds offer the closest wood-like grains and stains. So, if you are trying to match up other wood blinds or other wood elements with faux woods, composites would be the best choice. Vinyl blinds do come in wood-colored stains but, in my opinion, are best suited to non-wood colors, like white, beige, etc and these tend to be the most common applications. One final point on the issue of choices, both vinyl blinds and composite blinds can come with in a textured or smooth finish. The best way to get a sense for these differences is to order swatches.

One last consideration, one of growing importance, is the issue of eco-friendliness. If you are concerned about the environment, cutting down trees, and recycling than composite wood blinds may be the best choice. Comfortex now offers an eco-friendly line of faux wood composites. These are made with real wood along with recycled man-made materials. I, for one, applaud Comfortex for addressing this issue by launching a line of eco-friendly blinds. I hope that this is the beginning of a trend within the industry.

I would like to put a piece of wood in one of my fish tanks, with an Oscar in it. I am planning on getting the wood from my backyard, because I have heard of people doing it before and the outcome is beautiful. But, I also know how the wood will turn the water a gross murky brown and I am a clean water fanatic. I know that you can keep the wood from doing that, but I don’t know how. So… do any of you?

Gary Nealon asked:

When you start shopping for kitchen cabinets, the type of wood used is just as important as the overall look or finish of the cabinets. Depending on whether you are buying RTA (ready-to-assemble), stock, semi-custom, or custom cabinets will have a big impact on the types of woods that are available for you to select from. Custom cabinets will offer the largest selections of wood types, but you will also pay significantly more for them. Here is a list of wood types that you may come across in your search for kitchen cabinets (listed in order of price)

Paint Grade

Paint Grade wood can really consist of a wide range of wood types. Most stock and semi-custom cabinet companies that apply a painted finish may even use MDF or Particleboard instead of wood. The most common paint grade woods will be Birch, Poplar, or Maple.

Oak

Oak is probably the most widely used wood for cabinets. Most contractor grade cabinets, and more economically priced cabinets will be made of Oak. Oak is available in over 200 different species and is grown all around the world. The most common finish for Oak cabinets is just a natural or honey finish. Oak is a strong, dense wood that will hold up to everyday use and can accept stain well.

Pine

Pine comes in three different versions- white, yellow, or ponderosa. White pine can be very easy to work with and will accept stain easily, while ponderosa will require some special attention because of the resin that may still be concentrated in the wood. Pine is great for creating a rustic feel for your home.

Maple

Maple is another widely used wood type and can be found in a wide variety of species. This is probably the most common wood found in RTA Cabinets, because it is grows abundantly in Northern China and most RTA cabinets come from China. There are also more than 10 species of Maple that come out of the US, so there is a wide variety of grains. Most maple is very easy to work with and will accept stain easily. Maple finishes well in any color- from a Honey Finish to a Chestnut Glaze.

Cherry

Cherry is typically used in the mid-priced to higher end cabinets. The unique feature about Cherry is that with a light stain applied, it will actually get darker with time. As the wood ages and is exposed to sunlight, it will change to the reddish brown color most people associate with antique cherry furniture.

Bamboo

With the push towards becoming eco-friendly, more and more cabinets are being designed using Bamboo. Bamboo is a hearty plant that grows rapidly. The biggest drawback to bamboo is that it has to be veneered over another wood, since Bamboo plants do not grow thick enough to cut into planks. Right now, you will only find Bamboo being used by custom shops primarily on the West Coast

Mahogany

Mahogany creates a very rich look, and the wood itself is reddish-brown. Aside from exotic woods, this is going to be one of the most expensive options in the common wood types. Mahogany accepts stain very well, but is not an overly strong wood.

Whether you are building a high end kitchen, or just updating a rental unit, there are a wide variety of wood types to select from. Selecting a wood type that will hold up to the amount of use and abuse it will incurr is just as important as how the finished product will look, so keep that in mind when shopping for kitchen cabinets.

Jesse Akre asked:

Wood kitchen tables are classics. There have been wood kitchen tables since the days of the farm house, the pioneer homes. Even back to biblical times the eating space in the kitchen was made of wood.

Back then it made perfect sense to have wood kitchen tables. The wood to make them was easily accessible by chopping down a nearby tree. Today, although we can skip on the chopping down of the tree on our own, there are still a number of great reasons to use wood kitchen tables.

Wood kitchen tables can complete the look of your kitchen. The materials in wood kitchen tables can compliment the wood that is already in use for your cabinets and counter edging. Wood kitchen tables also offer a friendly, natural feeling that welcomes people to take a seat and have something to eat.

This is where the strength of wood comes into play. The durable surface will allow many, many meals to be enjoyed on the surface and still have the table looking strong and new.

As you are considering purchasing wood kitchen tables there are some important things to take into consideration. This is going to be a major purpose. For the most part, people do not trade out their wood kitchen tables year after year. These tables are purchases that are going to stick around for a long time. So you want to make sure you get exactly what you need.

You should look through the wood kitchen tables on the market and find ones that will look good for years to come. Generally, wood kitchen tables on their own do this. Wood kitchen tables are always in style and can blend in with almost any style you decide on in your kitchen.

Next consider the seating solutions you need in your kitchen. For the most part you should have an idea of how many people may be eating in the kitchen on most days. You need to make sure you will have enough room to accommodate all of them. If you have some change in these numbers you may want to look at wood kitchen tables with leaves so you can extend the table when more people are around and condense it when you don’t need the extra space.

Make sure to know the square footage you have available before buying wood kitchen tables. While you may have enough room for the table, make sure to remember that people have to be able to get in and out of the chairs, comfortably, so make that you have allotted enough space. Part of your purchasing decision may be made by the chairs that go with the table. Some take up a little more space and may force you to shrink your table size to be able to fit all the pieces in your kitchen.

Once you have sorted out the size, you can start looking at style. That will not be a problem since wood kitchen tables come in a wide range of design options from classic wood, to wood and metal, wood with a glass top, and the very popular wood with tile top style.

Journey Boy asked:

All the wood in my house (chair railings, cabinetry) is a dark maple color. I love cypress flooring, but am not sure if that would match. Also, the house is about 3,000 sq ft. What would be an estimated cost. Anyone know of a good contractor in Dallas to do this kind of work? Sorry for the long question.
