Hi, I have had some skirting boards and doors fitted and I want then to keep their natural wood look but think they need a little something. What is the difference between staining and varnishing, do you do one or the other or are they part of the same proceudure? What is the best/quickest method to get good results and can you use these methods over wood filler where there is small gaps in the wood? Thanks

I bought the dresser 8 months ago, but the inside still has that strong wood smell. The smell sticks on my clothes, I have to spray a lot of perfume just to avoid smelling like I spent the whole week chopping woods.

Wood toys offer something different. Once, nearly all toys were made of wood. Now, it seems that more and more toys are being made of plastics. Parents might find that going back to a simpler time by buying wood toys brings rewards they never considered.

1. Wood toys are durable. Plastic toys are not made with any concept of how rough children play with them. Even though they may pass minimum testing, they are no match for toys made of solid hardwood construction. They cannot be torn apart or broken into pieces — they are strong and tough.

2. Long term value counts. While plastic toys may be cheaper, they are not designed to survive more than one child. Wood toys will not only make it through the use of one child, they will be around for that generation’s children and grandchildren. When you consider the time that the toys will be used, the cost is very inexpensive.

3. Quality is important. Not all wood toys are made with quality construction methods. It is necessary to check the ordering information you get to make sure. See that the manufacturer is using good hardwoods or woods that are appropriate for those particular wood toys.

4. Safety is in the spotlight. Not all wood toys are the best, but the wood toys that are safe for children have special safety features. Look for rounded corners, nontoxic paints, wood that will not splinter, and no small pieces.

5. Wood toys add decorative flair. Your child’s room will have a more classic look with wood toys and toy boxes in it. Their brightly painted surfaces will add interest that plastic toys could not begin to equal. Wood toys can be seen as decorations as well as playthings. Other toys are simply seen as clutter.

6. You buy variety. Wood toys come in many different categories, from wood blocks to pull-along toys. There are rocking chairs and maze tables. Older children will enjoy playing Chinese checkers on a classic wooden board. There is something for every child.

7. Fun is the name of the game. Children will truly have fun with their wood toys. They will play with them from the time they are toddlers until they are grown. The charm of wooden toys is not lost on youngsters, who cherish them and play to their heart’s content.

8. Wood toys are easy to clean up. Most of them have only a few pieces. The prime exception is wood blocks, which can be gathered up quickly and stored in a wood toy box. When wood toys have a good finish on them, they are also easy to wipe down after a spill.

9. Wood toys give you peace of mind. You can rest assured that wood toys containing only large pieces will not present a choking hazard for your small child. There will be no toxic paints to make her sick. The toys will not fall apart the first week after the child receives them. You can have peace of mind, knowing you have made a wise investment in durable wood toys.

Alastair Hamilton asked:

The article will give you the information on wood railings. The information is necessary for installation of all wood products and railings in particular. It will also give you tips on wood care to make it long lasting.

Wooden railing is the first choice for any owner or the builder as the elegance and the style that you get from wooden railings is nothing compared to other materials. Some time the light reflection from all sources disturbs you. Wood does not reflect light as much as steel does, a kind of sereneness, and tranquility that you get from use of wood, you cannot get from any other material.

- Advantages Of Wood Railings

There are many advantages of wooden railings particularly indoor railings.

1. The elegance of wood is unmatched by anything else.

2. Contrary to popular belief, wood railings are maintenance free, particularly those used indoors. A nice polishing, a coat of lacquer while installing, is all that is required, and no further maintenance is required.

3. Another advantage of wood is that it massive in construction and will last for several decades if not centuries.

4. With its wide top, children (and some times grown ups too!) enjoy the wood railing sliding down the railing for coming down instead of coming down by steps. Oh what fun!

- Choice Of Wood For Railings

Wooden stock rails, balusters and newel can be made in Burma teak, Cherry, Maple, Red Oak, White Oak, Walnut, Mahogany, Poplar, Beech, Yellow Pine, Ash or Cedar. Many manufacturers can give you the top rail design that you desire or dream. Manufacturers use CAD systems, CNC machinery, and hand artistry, to give you any rail profile, baluster turnings or newel post.

Care Of Wood In General, Railing In Particular

Wood when properly treated and cared for requires no maintenance. The major enemy of wood is the life forms capable of living and thriving on wood. The microscopic life starts first and then it is like a jungle, where the food chain starts. Therefore if you treat wood with chemicals to stop the growth of micro-organisms and keep water away from it, the possibility of wood rot gets much less. Regular cleaning, annual polishing, waxing when the wood railing looks dull is all that is required for caring the wood articles and railing in general. Out-door railings may require painting to keep them looking new.

I am looking for inexpensive wood for a 3 1/2 ft by 10 ft area, that is 2ft high. I know treated wood last longer, but doesn’t it have so nasty chemicals in it?

Allison Thomas asked:

Wood planters are a beautiful and functional addition to any outdoor setting. Whether they are placed on a small balcony or within a large garden, a well-chosen wood planter will both complement and enhance the décor.

Based on my experience as a botanical garden worker, I can say that wood planters are durable, sturdy and easily crafted into different styles and finishes. I have had fun “making them my own”.

A colored stain lets the grain of the wood show through while adding interest and texture. You can get more creative by adding a stenciled pattern to the wood or even glass mosaic tiles for a wonderful effect.

The versatility of wood planters is unlimited. They can be used as window boxes, hanging containers and self standing planters. These planters are striking at front doors, on balconies, in patios, around pools and throughout any garden.

Try to think about your space and where these could work. Maybe you have done the patio or just outside the window. How about trying the one as a window enhancement?

It’s hard to beat the beauty and strength of wood planters, but not all woods are created equal. While these time-honored planters showcase the finer details of outdoor living, different woods exhibit different properties.

You have a lot of choice out there. Here are some tidbits of information I have gathered based on my own experience. Also ask a gardening friend or your local shop about their thoughts as you decide what type of material is right for you. Sometimes it is hard to find a variety in retail stores, so an online solution might be best.

• Teak planters are elegant and long-lasting. The wood is resistant to decay.

• Redwood cedar is durable and has a natural resistance to rotting.

•Wood planters in general (versus plastic) hold their handsome appearance year after year with very little maintenance.

• Painted wood planters can complement home design and color.

• Wood planters work well with other accessories like benches and trellises.

• Cedar wood planters add personality and tradition.

• Wood planters come in many shapes and sizes.

• Wood planters do better in colder weather and provide more insulation than other planter materials.

Extending the life of your wood planter is easy and requires very little effort. If you decide to treat the wood with a stain or waterproofing agent prior to planting it, make sure it is a non-toxic agent. Next, line the planter with heavy duty plastic. The plastic will keep water away from the wood. Fill the bottom of the planter with a layer of crushed rock followed by soil, leaving about three inches from the top.

Do not be afraid to make the box your own with a stain that matches your taste. Any wood stain found at your local hardware or home center will do.

You are now ready to plant flowers from your local nursery. Final step, enjoy! You cannot go wrong by spreading the love of flowers, plants and vegetable gardens. One of life’s little pleasures is the world of gardening.
