Stan asked:

Or will the oil eventually soak in or dry? If it will remain oily between oiling, and the surface is not needed for food prep, what is a standard way to finish the oiled wood to preserve the look but make it more general purpose? Polyurethane?

I just got a new chest of drawers. My wife plans to put her sweaters in them. We’ve had problems with moths in the closet, so we used little mothball bags in the closet. I just found out that cedar wood is a natural moth repellant. I found some cedar wood balls in the hardware store. How do I use it? One ball per drawer? How long does it last? Do I need to replace them or “recharge” them after a few years? Thanks for the help.

Proverbial Quimby asked:

I’ve seen on TV shows where you can paint wood and use a spray bottle of water to water down the paint and make it more like a stain. How do I do this?

I’m having trouble matching the stain color on quarter-rounds to the cabinet. I’m thinking it might be easier to do it with paint and use this spray water technique. Is it easy? Is this a good idea? Is there any resources to tell me how to do this?

Hi, I have had some skirting boards and doors fitted and I want then to keep their natural wood look but think they need a little something. What is the difference between staining and varnishing, do you do one or the other or are they part of the same proceudure? What is the best/quickest method to get good results and can you use these methods over wood filler where there is small gaps in the wood? Thanks

we’re moving into a rental that has a brick fireplace that reaches the ceiling. Then on both sides of the fireplace is dark wood paneling. If worse comes to worse, we can just paint it, but that’s a little boring. Is there such things as faux stones or tiles on a panel that I could post up on both sides or something to that effect? (Ease is key) Maybe wall paper? Might not be a good idea on paneling.

I have a wood patio swing with a metal “A” frame that has a canopy and built in side tables, unfortunately the wood has cracked after 10 years of use. I’d love to replace it with a high quality contemporary model but haven’t been able to find a stylish replacement. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We have a house built in ‘54 it has original oak wood floors, the polyurithane is worn off, we have a couple spots that the wood is splintered that would need to be filled, what is a good filler, we are talking about a area 4inch long x 1 inch wide and 1/4 inch deep. What about spaces between wood boards, do we fill them? Anyone done the sanding and staining and refinishing? Any sugestions or tips you would like to share? Thanks!

We just moved into a rental home and every wall is wood paneling! The land lord has said that we can make any improvements we want, but I don’t want to invest too much money in something I can’t take with me when I leave in a few years. Any ideas (maybe with fabric) of how to disguise ugle wood paneling?

I live/own a home that has “good” wood paneling in the living room. It makes the room darker than I like. I would like to cover/replace this paneling with drywall or something to brighten it up. My parents on the other hand say that the “good” wood paneling increases the value of the home. Is there any proof of this or is it their opinion? Yes, the house was built in the 60’s and hasn’t had much of any upgrades (grandmothers house that was inherited). Thanks for your response.
