Miss Informed asked:

I recently aquired a china hutch that may have been made between 1887 and 1933. The company primarily worked in hardwoods and were considered a high-end furniture maker.
Unfortunately I have to refinish it because of multiple deep scratches on most of the surfaces of the piece.
I’ve sanded the top so I have a clear look at the wood but I have no idea what it could be (I don’t know maple from mahogany!). The wood is pretty light and has a lot of “rings” on it. The origional varnish was what I’d consider a maple or cherry color. Aside from toting a part of it in to an expert, how might I be able to tell at home? I’ve tried searching for pictures but I haven’t come up with much.
Thanks in advance!

I am mounting wood animal shapes to a wooden swing-set. Instead of using the traditional wood dowels I am using bolts, heads removed of course, for added strength. I need to know what adhesive to use. Thank you.

I want to start building furniture and have a little bit of experience with carpentry. What is a good, cheap wood I can start with? I want a hardwood. I know poplar isn’t very high quality, but is it good enough to just play around with and make a few small projects?

Sarah asked:

I had this idea to build a 16′ x 7′ overhead garage door, but I’m not sure what type of wood to use. I’m a theatre technician. So, my idea was to build each segment similiar to a broadway flat. The way I build a broadway flat is by using 1″ x 4″ pine as a flat frame with the 4″ part connecting to the luan panel. I don’t think that either of those materials would be suitable for outdoor use, but I would like to use materials with similiar properties. I will be using standard garage door hardware on it, but the flats are just the basic concept.

I plan on making a gift out of wood for a christmas present, a box, or perhaps carving out a heart, something like that.

I have created such gifts before, but always in a class where the materials were supplied. I do not know what type of wood to use.

In my class, we sanded down the wood and coated it to make it shine and slick. What wood would work with this? and also what would I use for the coating?
