saylorkc asked:

I have an enclosed porch made of wood with sliding glass windows in metal frames. The previous owners didn’t maintain it well and now I have a lot of rot and water leakage. I’ve been caulking it up and replaced some quarter round with the PVC type but is there a way to recover the rotten portions or do I simply have to rip it all out? Also any suggestions on getting a good water tight seal? Super Paint?
Luckily the porch is sitting on a concrete slab so flooring isn’t the problem.

I was just noticing on Flip it shows where you fix up homes and resell them, that many old houses have vertical slats of wood behind the drywall. What are those wood pieces or slats of wood called?

Thanks so much.
I meant horizontal, not vertical. I know they aren’t called studs. Thank you all for your answers.

stupid people make me laugh!!! asked:

I am trying to repair scratches in my wood floor. It has an oil based finish on it and they are just surface scratches I believe, but I would like to see them repaired easily. I am moreso wondering if there are any type of cloths that you can wipe and blend. I am not trying to sand and do all kinds of work as my daughter putsa scratches in the floor often and I would only like to completely refinish once a year. Please answer if you know.
i may try what you suggest if the stores where i am currently living carry such items. i would imagine they do, but after all i am in europe and conveniences like those of the states are not always found

Solunas asked:

I just bought a beautiful gently used wood rocker but it squeaks. What is the best oil to use for a good piece of wood furniture? I have olive oil, coconut oil, peanut oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil and mineral oil already on hand. Will any of these work without doing harm to the wood? I’d prefer a natural and inexpensive solution.

There are 2 fireplaces sharing one pit, 1 on each side in 2 separate rooms. Will burning wood most of the night help with heating costs? What are other methods for cutting back on heating?

Reggie asked:

i’ve been ignoring the wood grain fallings ( looks like brown sand) from my wooden door by simply wiping it off. till recently, i discovered that one portion of my door is hollow. Could I be because of termite attack or the wood is aging? i have got to put a stop to it. Can anyone explain to me what’s going on?

FORDMAN asked:

I plan on restoring the original wood windows in my 100 year old farm house. The first thing I am going to have to do is remove many thick coats of paint.I have heard that steam works well to loosen thick coats of paint, and I am considering building a steam chamber out of a 55 gallon drum to heat the sashes up to 200 degrees or so to loosen the paint.Assuming I am successfull in removing the paint, how can I tell when the wood is dried out thoroughly, and ready to paint.
Please note,I am not submersing the wood sashes in water,I am exposing them to 212 degree hot air and steam.
