I have a built in open fireplace and recently it’s begun to burn through the wood so so quickly. (tested different log types) . It can burn through a log basket 60cm x 40cm in just a couple of hours -that’s about 50 or so logs. There is a lever on the right which moves the “flap” (can’t think of a better word) at the opening of the chimney to wide or narrow. I tested both wide and narrow but no obvious change. It’s actually burnt through sections of the fire grate. How do I find more info on how fast or slow it should burn etc etc. Aside from log types, what else may cause the fire to burn so quickly?

I know there is a wood pellet basket to use in wood stoves, but it doesn’t fit in my stove. Also the cast iron victorian fire baskets are nice but pricey.
Can I just make a pile in the bottom of the wood stove or would the amount of heat produced melt the metal?

We bought some wood that is “hardwood” - I think it is mostly very hard cherry. It is dried, some might be still cut from this year though. When we burn it, it looks nice for awhile then it burns out and leaves logs that are just charred and black. Why? What should we do? Do we need to mix in other types of less hard wood or something? What is the way to get the best use of our firewood…obviously this is our first fireplace so any good tips are welcome.

My wood posts have broken off at the ground where they are mounted into the cement. Is there a way to remove the post, put in a metal one, and pour cement around it without breaking out the original cement? If I could get the wood out of the hole in the cement, I could put the metal post in which is a smaller diameter than the wood one.
