sweething asked:

We have a wood ****** that comes every day to the same spot on the side of our house and has pecked a significant hole. The house is siding with a few wood trim boarding. No where else, just the one spot. What can we do besides covering only the wood with metal flashing. Chemicals? Deterant? trap?

You may just seriously have to use a gun. Sometimes the wood peckers find a spot and for some unknown reason continue to peck away at the hole. My neighbor had this problem and ultimately they had to shoot the bird to get it to quit damaging the area. You can try putting some kind of metal flashing over the area, but if the bird returns and begins pecking at or near the original area, you’ll probably have to destroy the bird.

Put some framing around the hole and let that beautiful creature live its life. You are so fortunate to have this woodpecker move into the side of your house. I had a woodchuck built a home on the side of my tool shed and everybody told me to kill it. But I let him be. I adorned the entrance to his home and he has been there for over twenty years, best neighbor I have ever had….KECK

I don’t like that gun idea.

Don’t woodpeckers peck to get at bugs, to eat? I think they do. I mean, why else would a woodpecker peck? For amusement? I think not.

I suggest eliminating his food source. There must be something up there that he is coming back for, as a snack. Call an exterminator and have them treat the area. For all you know, this annoying nuisance bird is doing you a favor by being an early-warning signal that you have termites.

Other than that, I would get one of those meancing-looking plastic owls and mount it in the area near where the woodpecker pecks. If you tape a photo of **** Cheney on the owl, I guarentee you, that traumatized bird will never come back.

IF you have a .22 you can get bird shot shells for it. they are low velocity and won’t kill but will just pepper it. if you’re of the mind not to use firearms, then get a fake owl that alot of gardeners use to scare it off. you can get them alot of different places.
