And a french horn! How many rock songs of the past 40 years can you name that had a french horn? I think (from my increasingly fallible memory which is not enhanced by all the wine I’ve drunk) 10cc did a couple of tracks that had one. But just about any instrument you can name appeared on one or other 10cc track (and those guys played the instruments themselves).

I now realize why I don’t listen to much modern music. It’s not as inventive.

Roy is only underrated to those that no nothing about pop music, otherwise the rest of us know how great and consistant he has been down the years.

A pure & absolutely fabby pop song. Baritone & tenor saxes everywhere. A drama! Backing vocals excellent. Roy Wood was and remains a genius. This is possibly the 6th best pop tune ever written. XX

RORY

Hi theoriginalsuzycat, I seriously thought that Roy was singing “she my baby die” I thought it was so cool, until someone told me it was jive
Maybe I was morbid too

I seriously thought the lyrics were “see my baby die” when I was a child.

What? There were a few morbid death songs around at the time IIRC.

Wow I haven’t seen this film clip for 30 years! It left a lasting impression and reminds me that music can be fun. I even remembered the guy with angel wings on roller skates, wearing the cricket pads. Absolutely brilliant song.
A good example of one of the early “made for television” promotional video clips. Much better than impromptu lip syncing in front of a bemused “live” audience.
Anyone remember Rock Star - Supernova, 2 years ago? Do you see the resemblance between Roy Wood and Dilana?!

Roy Wood has always been a great pop musician.
But I have never understand especially the
way he looked those Wizzard days. Too bizarre,
too overblown, over the top. I think much
less talented artist would try that way to
get more recognition.

Yes, he was. He played with Jeff Lynn and Bev Bevan in the Band “The Move”, and later they founded ELO. But he left ELO after their first album to found Wizzard.

Wasn’t he also a founding member of ELO?
