wood
MJ_3000 asked:

I know its not a wood chip, I just don’t know what to call it, but why is there that wood thing in like every bag! There is always atleast 1 of them, or sometimes 2, and sometimes 3! Like I had today!
What is it? Why is it in there?

It’s part of the sunflower stem that got roasted with the seeds, making it look like a wood chip.

It is part of the stem from the plant. A sunflower is a very large flower. And the stem is large to hold the flower up. The companies are not watching that close because they are small and not harmful. Eat some seeds for me too. Happy Holidays to you.

The way they process sunflower seeds is they ***** them with a press that just ever so slightly cracks the shells. Then they are shaken, which shakes the seeds out of the cracked shells. Then they all put in water, seeds and all, which the shells float and the seeds sink to the bottom….then they are removed and dried over heat (which is why almost all de-shelled sunflower seeds are roasted).
In this process, sometimes sticks and twigs and pieces of shells make it through the drying and inspection process, which is why u find them in the bags occasionally. :)
